Learn the rules of blackjack, step by step
Online Blackjack Rules
Blackjack has long been a favorite table game of gamblers all over the world. blackjack, also called 21, can be either a game of chance and pure luck, or a game of skill and strategy – if you’re good at it. Gamblers can play their favorite casino game in the comfort of their own home, and try to win some serious cash. The following article will outline all of the basic online blackjack rules, as well as general information about playing blackjack online.
Online blackjack is no different than playing blackjack in a live casino, however there are many more advantages of playing blackjack online. In an online blackjack game, there is one dealer and anywhere from 1 to 5 players, including yourself. The players will have to set their wager on the table before the dealer will deal any cards. Each online blackjack game may have different minimums or maximums that you can bet. The smallest bet may be $1.00 in some online blackjack games. Like in casinos, you also have the option to “double down”, “split”, and “insurance”.
Each online blackjack player will receive two cards in the first deal, just as a live casino would do. As an online blackjack player, your goal is to play against the dealer. You need to get as close to 21 as possible, without going over. You need a higher number than the dealer, or you need the dealer to “bust” by them going over 21. If they do, you will automatically win that round. If you get a natural 21 in the your first two cards dealt, such as an ace and a ten, the dealer will automatically payout 1.5 times your wager. The concept of the game is quite simple, since the main goal of blackjack is to obtain a total of 21 points or to be closer to 21 than your dealer, who will be competing with all the players at the table.
Each player may receive as many cards as they wish, but it is only advised that you take as many cards that will get you closest to 21 without going over. To get more cards, you can “hit”, which means the dealer will give you another card from the deck. If you have 17 points or more, it’s usually recommended that you “stay”. By “staying”, the dealer will not deal you anymore cards and this will prevent you from going over you limit of 21.
If there is a tie between a blackjack player and their dealer, it is known as a “push”. The player will not lose or win anything. They get to keep their wager. Just as casinos require the dealers to “stay” after getting 17 points, online blackjack rules are the same. A dealer will usually stay after getting a total of 17 points or more. The game should automatically end and players will be paid out if the dealer goes over 21.
Aces may be counted as a 1 or 11. You can use aces to your advantage in such a way that if you receive an ace and a ten, you have 10 + 11= 21. However, let’s say you have 18 points dealt already, you’re feeling lucky so you “hit”. You receive an ace. This ace will not be 11 points, it will only be 1. So 18+1=19. You are lucky, and are that much closer to a 21. If you start out with your ace as 11, since you have no other cards, but then you get, say, an 8 and then a 9, your ace will once again be transformed from an 11 into a 1 to make it fair for you. However, a dealer’s ace is always counted as 11.
When a player or dealer has a hand that has no ace as 11, or any face cards (such as a king or queen), but they only have several numbers, it is known as a “hard hand”. Hard hands are the most dreaded kinds of hands for most blackjack players. It is very risky to get a hand without an ace or a face card, since it often keeps you thinking about your hand for a while. Do you hit or do you stay? If you are fantastic at counting cards, you will have better luck with a hand like this, than someone who plays purely by luck.
The term “Double Down” means that you are able to increase your wager, up to twice your original amount, and the dealer will also deal you another card. This is a typical move for players who feel lucky or have a really good idea of which number will be coming next.
The term “Split” refers to when players double their wager, as they would in a double down, except the player will then have each card in their original hand split into two separate hands. For example, if you receive two fours, you can say “split”, and you will have two separate hands, each with a 5, and the dealer will ask you if you want to hit or stand on each of these separate hands. This can increase your chances of winning in at least one of your hands.
A “Surrender” means a player wants to give up and end the game. In this case, the dealer takes half the players’ chips.
“Insurance” is a term used and played in most American casinos or some online casinos. If the dealer shows an ace after their second deal, the dealer may offer the players to buy “insurance” before the next deal starts. To buy this insurance, a player simply places up to half their original bet on a designated spot on the table. This way, if the dealer ends up with a blackjack, a player will lose their original bet, but will win back the equivalent because of their insurance.
